Discharging patients is a process that, if done efficiently and with effective communication between both departments, has impactful results. When Patient Transportation provides Environmental Services with real time notification that a patient has been discharged, it allows patient rooms to be cleaned immediately, improving timeliness. This positively impacts room availability, allowing patient placement to assign inpatient admits from the Emergency Department much quicker. Not only can this reduce ED hold hours, it impacts ED wait times and instances were patients leave without being seen.
Environmental Services and Patient Transport should ideally work in tandem to create the most streamlined, cost-effective process that benefits both patients and hospitals.
