HHS Culinary has committed to purchasing only humanely raised, cage-free eggs and sustainable seafood for all job sites in 2017. As part of a larger company-wide commitment to animal welfare and responsible stewardship, HHS is proud to push forward with plans to ensure all animal products purchased for our culinary programs are humanely and sustainably raised.
As HHS Culinary continues to grow, we believe it is our responsibility to engage with suppliers who are equally committed to striving for an environment consistent with The 5-Step Animal Welfare Standards developed by Global Animal Partnership.
The 5-Step Animal Welfare Standards consist of:
- Step 1 – No cages, no crates, no crowding
- Step 2 – Enriched environment
- Step 3 – Enhanced outdoor access
- Step 4 – Pasture centered
- Step 5 – Animal centered, physical alterations prohibited
- Step 5+ – Animals live entire life on integrated farm
HHS Culinary is committed to following the Global Animal Partnership multi-tiered animal welfare standards to educate team members, clients, and consumers regarding current and future animal welfare concerns and best practices.
“It goes without saying that our commitment to animal welfare is simply the right thing to do, and in reality, our industry is already headed in that direction,” explains Dirk Noteboom, Executive Vice President of Operations & Clinical Nutrition Services at HHS Culinary.
“Ultimately, we believe that moving toward a more sustainable and healthful ingredient base will have a significant and positive long-term impact, both on the quality of food we provide to our customers, as well as on the availability and sustainability of the ingredients themselves.”
Update as of July 28th, 2017:
By 2024, HHS Culinary has committed to source only chickens certified by Global Animal Partnership (GAP), and will require all chickens to be processed in a manner that avoids live-dumping and live-shackling, and instead utilizes a pre-shackle, multi-step controlled-atmosphere processing system that’s widely hailed as more humane.
